Digital AC Clamp Meter

What is a Digital AC Clamp Meter?

A Digital AC Clamp Meter, also known as a clamp-on meter, is a specialized tool designed primarily for measuring AC current (amperage) without interrupting the circuit. It is widely used by electricians and technicians for its convenience and accuracy in diagnosing and monitoring electrical systems.

I own a Digital AC Clamp Meter from KYORITSU, model KEW SNAP 2017, which I use extensively for various electrical tasks.

Features of KYORITSU KEW SNAP 2017

  1. Safety Compliance:
    • Designed to CAT III 600 VAC standards as per international safety standard IEC 61010-1.
    • Pollution degree 2 safety rating.
  2. Ease of Use:
    • Tear-drop-shaped jaw for effortless use in tight spaces and crowded cable areas.
    • Data Hold Function: Locks the current reading for easy reference.
    • Wide frequency range from 40 Hz to 1 kHz for versatile applications.

How to Measure AC Current with a Clamp Meter

  1. Set the Range:
    • Turn the range switch to 200A or 600A, depending on the expected current.
  2. Clamp the Meter:
    • Press the trigger to open the transformer jaws.
    • Clamp the jaws onto the conductor to measure current.
    • For maximum accuracy, ensure the conductor is centered within the jaws.
  3. Read the Measurement:
    • The AC current value will be displayed on the digital screen.

Important Safety Precautions

  • Keep your fingers and hands behind the barrier during measurement.
  • Never use the instrument with the battery cover removed.
  • Remove any measurement probe before using the clamp jaws.
  • Do not switch the range while performing a measurement.
  • Avoid using the clamp meter on circuits exceeding 600 VAC RMS.

Why Use a Digital Clamp-On Meter?

A clamp-on meter is a practical and efficient tool for:

  • Measuring current without breaking the circuit.
  • Quick troubleshooting of electrical systems.
  • Ensuring safe and reliable measurements in industrial and residential setups.
