Measuaring motor insulation using HI POT tester

When we need to evaluate the motor condition,HI-POT tester or High Potential tester is the common equipment are used.As we know,a multimeter or ohm meter reading only can determine if a motor winding is open or shorted but cannot checked winding insulation condition if shorted with ground or phase.

The main purpose of the Hi Pot tester is to verify the quality and integrity of the electric motor insulation materials used on the armature or stator and also safe to using it without any defect.

Sometime we not take a serious attention or not know about it to checked winding insulation.This step is important to ensure motor can running in good condition without any breakdown. read more

Temperature winding correction

When we perform insulation resistance tester,temperature winding effected the accuracy of Mega Ohms reading.The basic theory is when temperature increase,the insulation resistance decrease due to physical factor of material for winding.

To get a accurate reading for insulation resistance ( Mega Ohms ),we need to ensure the minimum temperature during measurement.

According to IEEE  43,the temperature correction should be to 40 °C and the correction factor for temperature is such that the minimum insulation resistance value is doubled for every 10 °C decrease in winding temperature. read more

From the data of insulation resistance,we can make a perfect and clear decision either the electrical equipment in good condition or not.

To be a good troubleshooter,we must know how to testing electrical and electronic components.Several components are common used in electrical and electronic device or equipment.This technique is a common essential for the troubleshooter.

The important measuring device that we should have to perform a testing task is a ” Multimeter”.This meter is used to measure continuity or resistance in components.

After we completed the 2 stage process of troubleshooting ( 1.situation analysis & 2.problem solving ),we need to proceed the last stage ( 3.decision making ).Decision making is defined as the best option,conclusion or alternative ways for our solution to rectify the breakdown or machine problem.

Ok..for example,after we troubleshooting,we confirm the root cause is electric motor defected,there could be several alternatives in deciding how to repair overall system.The motor could be repaired,it could be replaced by the same model or an entirely new upgraded model could be substituted depending upon the operating condition of system. How to use a clamp on meter?

In electrical field,current (ampere) is very important value.It very useful to sizing the circuit breaker,sizing the electric cable,for troubleshooting guideline and many more.Without ampere value,we cannot get the best result for sizing or design.

How we can get a current value?We can use the ammeter or clamp on meter to measure the current value.If you remember in last post AC DIGITAL CLAMP ON METER,ampere must be measure in series circuit to get the value.Now for easy current measurement job,we use a clamp on meter.
