Measuaring motor insulation using HI POT tester

When we need to evaluate the motor condition,HI-POT tester or High Potential tester is the common equipment are used.As we know,a multimeter or ohm meter reading only can determine if a motor winding is open or shorted but cannot checked winding insulation condition if shorted with ground or phase.

The main purpose of the Hi Pot tester is to verify the quality and integrity of the electric motor insulation materials used on the armature or stator and also safe to using it without any defect.

Sometime we not take a serious attention or not know about it to checked winding insulation.This step is important to ensure motor can running in good condition without any breakdown. read more

Temperature winding correction

When we perform insulation resistance tester,temperature winding effected the accuracy of Mega Ohms reading.The basic theory is when temperature increase,the insulation resistance decrease due to physical factor of material for winding.

To get a accurate reading for insulation resistance ( Mega Ohms ),we need to ensure the minimum temperature during measurement.

According to IEEE  43,the temperature correction should be to 40 °C and the correction factor for temperature is such that the minimum insulation resistance value is doubled for every 10 °C decrease in winding temperature. read more

High voltage detector or indicator is the one of  important tool when perform the task in high voltage.It can determine if electrical line is live or not.The main purpose is to ensure we perform the job in a safety condition.

Around the world,many accident happened for electrical shock came from misidentified the electric line either it live or dead.Maintenance or electrical  person must double verify and confirm the electrical line status before do their job.

How to use a clamp on meter?

In electrical field,current (ampere) is very important value.It very useful to sizing the circuit breaker,sizing the electric cable,for troubleshooting guideline and many more.Without ampere value,we cannot get the best result for sizing or design.

How we can get a current value?We can use the ammeter or clamp on meter to measure the current value.If you remember in last post AC DIGITAL CLAMP ON METER,ampere must be measure in series circuit to get the value.Now for easy current measurement job,we use a clamp on meter.

I explain detail on my video how to use the clamp on meter.The important thing is we must safety first.Make sure the distance of  live conductor must in safe range.always beware when u perform the measurement job using the clamp on meter. Read More

Two Point Method

This is another alternative method for earthing resistance measurement when excellent ground is already available.When we want to perform the measurement for earthing resistance in the compact room or tight area and want to put the two(2) auxiliary rod  may be a problem.

So..to solve this problem,we can use the two point method measurement.This measurement concept is two point into the ground in series technique used to the reading obtained.

The earth surface or other ground must be very low in resistance so that it will be negligible in the final measurement. The lead resistances will also be measured and should be deducted from the final measurement. read more
